Samdrup Jongkhar lies in the southeastern part of Bhutan and borders the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The development of the town is attributed to the completion of the Samdrup Jongkhar-Trashigang national Highway in the 1960s. In the past, the Sharchops of Trashigang, Dungsam Orong and Trashi Yangtse used to trade in a small town called Gudama (mela bazaar). Samdrup Jonkhar Dzongkhag has a mixed population of Sharchops and Lhotshampas. It is also an important economic center of the country since this is where coal mining is carried out.
